Obelisco de Buenos Aires
Argentina
Rising majestically from the bustling intersection of Avenida 9 de Julio and Corrientes, this striking monument epitomises the heart of Buenos Aires. Erected in 1936 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the city's founding, the 67-metre-tall obelisk is a beacon of architectural simplicity yet a complex symbol of Argentine identity. Illuminated at night, it's a captivating sight, often dressed in vibrant colours for cultural events. Known for its charming peculiarities, the structure has survived several attempted demolitions and even sports a cheeky touch: the inscription "Nunca me verás de espaldas" meaning "You will never see my back", playfully etched on its south face.
