Fastelavn, a lively Danish celebration, is akin to a Nordic Halloween-cum-carnival. Traditionally children dress up in costumes and partake in "slå katten af tønden," where they hit a barrel filled with treats until it breaks, reminiscent of a piñata. Historically, a real cat was used, believed to drive away evil spirits. Today, sweets and fun replace the superstition.
