Somehow I don’t exactly remember how I found this app; I just recall it was early 2020 when I started my activity on SLOWLY. Of course, like most people, questions like ‘What should I do? What should I write?’ also popped into my mind. I began by sending a few short messages to people using the matching feature, and from there, I started to discover some new people whom we all commonly call pen pals!
After some time, many of my pen pals disappeared without a trace, deactivating their accounts. At that time, I also decided to take a break without informing my pen pals, which ended up being a hiatus for 3 years! Haha, time flies so quickly! Being busy with focusing on completing my education and entering the workforce made me forget about it. However, one day, while I was in a foreign city, I visited a post office and was interested in sending a postcard to a friend back home, which in mysterious ways reminded me of SLOWLY. Since then, I started to try to be active again, although feelings of guilt arose when I saw some replies from my pen pals sometime after I decided to take a break. Nevertheless, I still tried to reply to their letters, although until now, there has been no response from them. It’s a pity, isn’t it?
Now I’m starting over again, by sending open messages that I make as interesting as possible. Indeed, as I suspected, I started to receive many responses from potential pen pals! I realized that I truly enjoy exchanging letters with these people! I’d like to share a little about me and one of my pen pals, Martyna, from Poland, who with all her uniqueness, caught my interest. She was the first person to declare that I was her favorite pen pal on SLOWLY! Here’s a quote from her letter: ‘It’s really nice you are enjoying my letters, honestly you are my favorite person on this app, your letters make me feel so happy and I’m waiting for your letters so impatiently!’ Imagine receiving a letter with a sentence like that right at the beginning of a message in the morning when you’re about to go to work. It makes me start the day with a cheerful feeling!
It’s truly delightful to find oneself in this app, whereupon I’ve come to a profound realization: the absence of distance and time dimension can render us unable to truly honor the essence of longing.
