Eddystone Lighthouse

Eddystone Lighthouse

England

Perched on the Eddystone Rocks, 14 miles off the coast of Cornwall, this legendary lighthouse has a storied past as tumultuous as the waves that crash around it. Standing as the fourth iteration since 1698, its predecessors were vanquished by fire, wreckage, and erosion. The current lighthouse, with its distinctive fluted design crafted by John Smeaton in 1759, was a pioneering marvel, setting new engineering standards with its interlocking stone construction. Though relocated to the Plymouth Hoe in the 1880s, the lighthouse remains a beacon of resilience—both an architectural triumph and a testament to human determination against nature’s fury.
