Slowly Story

Since the height of the coronavirus pandemic in my country, Slowly App had connected me to a lot of interesting people from different walks of life around the world. I have had hundreds of delightful and meaningful conversations with them.

Some conversations have allowed me to learn something new or interesting about the world or even about myself, while others have taught me to be more patient or kinder. Others have inspired me to either discover or explore something new (e.g., book, movie, or recipe) or even ignite a new interest or passion (e.g., home baking). Some conversations have slowly developed into real and lasting connections that are mutually enriching.

While this App can magically connect 2 different people from 2 different worlds, its “magical power” to build connections that are both meaningful and enduring rely on our mutual willingness to openly share and communicate with each other, as well as our mutual willingness to respect and appreciate each other’s uniqueness.

Most friendships that develop through this App are built on common interests. But the friendships that are abiding, while helping us grow as individuals, are those that are also mutually respectful of our differences—cultural, personal or otherwise. Indeed it is our differences (e.g., experiences, perspective, skills, values) that allow us to make a difference or add value to each other’s lives.

Life can get in the way and become challenging or uninspiring at times. Writing letters are a perfect way of expressing emotions, especially for introverts, who seem like the majority of the users of this App. Letters are also useful for showing support to or encouraging one another.

It truly helps to have someone, near or far, who can patiently remind me to always get back on track after slipping up. That no matter how overwhelming life can feel, I know that someone somewhere truly cares. It is always comforting to know that despite all the hate, anxiety, and hardships, especially during a pandemic, someone somewhere is always willing to listen without judging me or agree to disagree when needed.

So to Slowly team and all the beautiful humans I’ve met through this App, I’m truly grateful for all of you.
