A new era of communication began in 1971
The first email was sent in 1971 by Ray Tomlinson, an engineer working on ARPANET, an early Internet network. His test message traveled between two connected computers and helped introduce email as a new way to communicate. Tomlinson also chose the @ symbol to separate the user name from the computer name.
