The first Litfaßsäule, or advertising column, was introduced in Berlin on 1 July 1855 by Ernst Litfaß. Designed to reduce messy wall posters, these cylindrical pillars became a popular way to display public notices and ads. Today, they remain a familiar sight in many German cities.
