Sumo (相撲) is a traditional Japanese wrestling sport with origins over a thousand years ago. Two wrestlers, called rikishi, compete in a circular ring, aiming to force their opponent out or make any part of their body other than the soles of their feet touch the ground. Sumo is deeply rooted in Shinto rituals and is considered Japan’s national sport.
