Merlion
Singapore
Standing at the Marina Bay Waterfront, this mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish is a sight to behold. Created in 1972, it symbolises Singapore's origins as a fishing village and its Lion City nickname. The imposing statue stands 8.6 metres tall, with water spouting majestically from its mouth. Legend has it that the name "Singapore" originated from the Malay 'Singapura,' meaning "lion city," inspired by a Sumatran prince's encounter with a lion. The Merlion has become an iconic emblem of the city, blending Singapore's rich history with a touch of whimsy.
